如同不断变奏的同一段配乐，贝多利尝试将同一个故事拆分成不同风格的交替：纯爱、黑色电影、黑帮片、悬疑。但仍未形成后来尖锐狂躁的风格，镜头不够精致、剪辑不够干净、配乐不够流畅。但我喜欢开头打鸟那段；以及他拍的西西里真的很西西里（原来是Sciascia的原著，难怪了）。

同样是跟小说给我留下的印象不太一样，极端放大教授的paranoia与孤立无援感，跟走通俗剧情路线的《白天的猫头鹰》不同还是相当强调导演作者性的，叙述较为含糊胜在**风格强烈，大量采用调长焦的窥视**视角放大角色。跟美国片不同文人查案并不会突然变得能打，Volonte顶着乱毛又弱又慌张的样子怪萌的（有被摸头）巴卡洛夫这个配乐从片头起就赶脚给力，抒情钢琴弦乐/惊悚打击乐，悲剧配欢歌。
