雷伊用伯格曼的方式讲述了一个短篇小说式的小故事。激烈讨论印度种姓问题之余，更核心的还是在讨论印度人中产阶级的身份，雷伊试图用辩论的方式击穿原本“坚固”的、根植在印度人心底的等级潜意识。虽然有时绕得有点远，那也只能算是雷伊不是一个会把话说得好听的辩手。故事本身毫无疑问是很枯燥的，但这也不是电影的重点。结尾的处理稍微有一些古怪的煽情，冲淡了前面严肃的哲思感。
